Heat Acclimation for Performance (Sauna Protocol)

biohacking · medium · 15-30 minutes post-workout, 3-4x/week for 3 weeks

What is Heat Acclimation for Performance (Sauna Protocol)?

Using post-exercise sauna sessions to trigger cardiovascular adaptations including expanded plasma volume, enhanced sweat response, and reduced exercise heart rate. Research shows up to 32% improvement in running time to exhaustion after a 3-week protocol.

How do you do Heat Acclimation for Performance (Sauna Protocol)?

  1. 1.Begin with 15-minute post-workout sauna sessions at 80-90C (176-194F). Sit or lie down and focus on hydrating before entry. Do not sauna if dehydrated.
  2. 2.Progressively increase duration to 25-30 minutes over 2 weeks. Aim for 3-4 sessions per week, ideally on consecutive days when possible.
  3. 3.Complete a minimum of 6-7 exposures to begin inducing adaptation. A full protocol runs 3 weeks (12+ sessions). Always sauna AFTER training, not before.
  4. 4.Hydrate aggressively: drink 16-24 oz water with electrolytes before sauna and another 16-24 oz after. Weigh yourself before and after to track fluid loss — replace 150% of lost weight in fluids.
  5. 5.For competition preparation, complete the heat acclimation block in the final 2-3 weeks before the event to minimize decay of adaptations.

How long does it take?

15-30 minutes post-workout, 3-4x/week for 3 weeks.

Is it hard to start?

medium.
