What is Circadian-Aligned Eating (Chrononutrition)?

Timing meals and macronutrients to align with the body's circadian rhythms for optimal metabolic health. Insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance peak in the morning and decline through the day, meaning identical meals produce different metabolic responses depending on when they're consumed.

How do you do Circadian-Aligned Eating (Chrononutrition)?

  1. 1.Front-load calories: make breakfast or lunch your largest meal. Aim for 40% of daily calories before 1 PM. Eating a protein-rich breakfast increases satiety and improves blood sugar control throughout the day.
  2. 2.Time carbohydrates early: consume the majority of your carbohydrates at breakfast and lunch when insulin sensitivity is highest. Evening carb consumption leads to higher postprandial glucose values due to reduced insulin sensitivity.
  3. 3.Evening meals should be lighter and protein/fat-focused: a moderate portion of protein with vegetables and healthy fats. Finish eating at least 3 hours before bedtime to allow digestion before sleep.
  4. 4.Establish a consistent eating window: maintain the same meal times daily (+/- 30 min) to entrain peripheral circadian clocks in the liver, gut, and adipose tissue. Irregular eating times desynchronize these clocks.
  5. 5.Avoid eating within 2-3 hours of sleep: late-night eating promotes fat storage (lower adiponectin, higher insulin-mediated lipogenesis) and disrupts sleep quality. If you must eat late, keep it small and protein-focused.

How long does it take?

No extra time — restructuring existing meals.

Is it hard to start?
