How do you do Natural Thyroid Support Protocol?
- 1.Prioritize selenium: 200mcg/day (or 2-3 Brazil nuts daily). Selenium is critical for the conversion of T4 to T3 and protects the thyroid from oxidative damage. This is the single most important thyroid-specific nutrient.
- 2.Ensure adequate iodine: 150mcg/day from food sources (seaweed, iodized salt, eggs, dairy). Do NOT mega-dose iodine — excess can worsen autoimmune thyroid conditions (Hashimoto's). Get tested before supplementing above 150mcg.
- 3.Support T4-to-T3 conversion: Zinc 15-30mg/day, Iron (if ferritin is low — test first), and Vitamin A from whole food sources. Reduce goitrogenic foods if consumed raw in large quantities (raw cruciferous vegetables, soy). Cooking neutralizes goitrogens.
- 4.Manage stress aggressively: chronic stress elevates cortisol, which directly suppresses TSH and inhibits T4-to-T3 conversion. Implement daily stress-reduction practice (meditation, breathwork, nature exposure).
- 5.Optimize gut health: 20% of T4-to-T3 conversion occurs in the gut. Address any gut dysbiosis, support the gut microbiome with fermented foods and fiber, and consider testing for intestinal permeability. Gluten elimination may help those with Hashimoto's (strong correlation with celiac disease).
