What is Coherent Breathing?

Breathing at approximately 5-6 breaths per minute (inhale 5-6 seconds, exhale 5-6 seconds) to maximize heart rate variability (HRV) by matching the body's baroreflex resonance frequency. Research confirms 5.5 breaths per minute with equal inhale:exhale ratio produces the highest HRV. Higher HRV is associated with better stress resilience, cognitive performance, and overall health. Lowers blood pressure and balances sympathetic/parasympathetic nervous system activity.

How do you do Coherent Breathing?

  1. 1.Sit or lie down comfortably with eyes closed; place one hand on chest and one on belly to monitor breath movement
  2. 2.Inhale slowly through the nose for a count of 5-6 seconds, allowing the belly to expand naturally; keep the chest relatively still
  3. 3.Exhale slowly through the nose for a count of 5-6 seconds, allowing the belly to fall naturally; maintain equal inhale and exhale duration
  4. 4.Continue this rhythm for 10-20 minutes; use a visual pacer app (like Breathing Ball or Inner Balance) or audio cue to maintain consistent timing without mental counting effort
  5. 5.Practice daily for 20 minutes; improvements in baseline HRV typically appear after 2-3 weeks of consistent practice; can also use as an acute calming tool for 5 minutes before stressful events
