4-7-8 Breathing (Relaxing Breath)

breathwork · beginner · 2-3 minutes, at least twice daily

What is 4-7-8 Breathing (Relaxing Breath)?

A breathing technique popularized by Dr. Andrew Weil, rooted in the yogic practice of pranayama. Uses a specific 4:7:8 ratio — inhale for 4 counts, hold for 7, exhale for 8 — to activate the parasympathetic nervous system. Described by Weil as 'a natural tranquilizer for the nervous system' that gains power with repeated practice (opposite of drugs which lose effectiveness). Limited to 4 breath cycles initially. Excellent for falling asleep, managing anxiety, and reducing cravings.

How do you do 4-7-8 Breathing (Relaxing Breath)?

  1. 1.Sit with back straight (or lie down if using for sleep); place the tip of your tongue against the ridge of tissue behind your upper front teeth and keep it there throughout the entire exercise
  2. 2.Exhale completely through your mouth making a 'whoosh' sound around your tongue to empty the lungs fully
  3. 3.Close your mouth and inhale quietly through your nose for a mental count of 4
  4. 4.Hold your breath for a count of 7 — this is the key phase where oxygen saturates the blood and the parasympathetic response activates
  5. 5.Exhale completely through your mouth with a 'whoosh' sound for a count of 8; repeat the cycle 4 times total (no more than 4 cycles for the first month); practice at least twice daily; after a month, extend to 8 cycles if desired

How long does it take?

2-3 minutes, at least twice daily.
