How do you do Mel Robbins 5-Second Rule?
- 1.Notice the moment you know you SHOULD do something but feel resistance (get out of bed, raise your hand, start the workout, make the call)
- 2.Immediately count backwards: 5-4-3-2-1 and MOVE. Stand up, open the laptop, pick up the phone, put on your shoes
- 3.The counting interrupts your brain's habit loop — it activates your prefrontal cortex (decision-making) and overrides the basal ganglia (autopilot/avoidance)
- 4.Use it for: waking up on time (5-4-3-2-1 throw off the covers), starting workouts, having difficult conversations, stopping procrastination
- 5.The rule isn't about motivation — it's about activation energy. Once you're in motion, motivation follows
