Digital Minimalism 30-Day Declutter

What is Digital Minimalism 30-Day Declutter?

Cal Newport's structured 30-day protocol for resetting your relationship with technology. Rather than tweaking screen time, you remove all optional technology for a full month, rediscover analog satisfaction, then selectively reintroduce only what serves clear values. The extended duration is critical — it takes 2-3 weeks for compulsive phone-checking urges to subside.

How do you do Digital Minimalism 30-Day Declutter?

  1. 1.Audit every app, device, and digital service in your life. Categorize each as 'essential' (required for work/safety — email, maps, banking) or 'optional' (everything else — social media, news apps, YouTube, streaming, games). Be honest: most things are optional
  2. 2.Remove all optional technology for exactly 30 days: delete apps, log out of websites, use browser blockers. Don't negotiate half-measures. Tell friends/family you'll be unreachable on social platforms and provide your phone number for real contact
  3. 3.During the 30 days, actively explore and schedule high-quality analog activities: join a physical class or club, start a hands-on hobby (woodworking, cooking, drawing), schedule weekly face-to-face social time, build a reading habit. Fill the void intentionally — the declutter fails if you just white-knuckle through boredom
  4. 4.Keep a daily journal (paper) noting: what you missed, what you didn't miss, what you did instead, how you felt. This data is critical for the reintroduction phase
  5. 5.After 30 days, start from a blank slate. For each technology you consider reintroducing, it must pass three tests: (1) Does it directly support a value I care about? (2) Is it the BEST way to support that value? (3) Can I constrain when and how I use it? If yes to all three, reintroduce with specific operating procedures (e.g., Instagram only on laptop, Sunday evenings, 20 minutes)

How long does it take?

30 days full protocol, then ongoing intentional use.

Is it hard to start?
