What is Mindful Consumption Audit?

A comprehensive weekly self-audit protocol for examining all forms of digital and media consumption — not just screen time, but what you consume and how it makes you feel. Inspired by the mindful eating movement applied to information diet. Most digital wellness tools measure quantity (hours) but miss quality (is this nourishing or toxic?). This protocol addresses both.

How do you do Mindful Consumption Audit?

  1. 1.For one full week, log every piece of media you consume in a simple spreadsheet with columns: Time, Platform/Source, Content Type (news, entertainment, social, educational, communication), Duration, Mood Before (1-5), Mood After (1-5), Intentional? (yes/no — did you choose this or drift into it). Include TV, podcasts, YouTube, social media, news, and articles — everything
  2. 2.At week's end, analyze the data: calculate total hours by category, average mood delta (after minus before) for each category, and percentage of intentional vs. unintentional consumption. Most people find that 60-80% of their media consumption is unintentional (opened phone, started scrolling) and that the content with the worst mood delta is consumed the most
  3. 3.Create your personal 'nourishing vs. depleting' list: based on your data, categorize sources and content types. Nourishing = mood improves, feels intentional, serves your goals (e.g., specific educational podcasts, messaging close friends, learning tutorials). Depleting = mood drops, unintentional, no lasting value (e.g., rage-bait news, comparison-heavy social feeds, mindless YouTube autoplay)
  4. 4.Design your intentional consumption plan: schedule nourishing content into your day (morning podcast during commute, evening reading), block depleting content (unfollow, mute, block, unsubscribe, delete apps). Set a 'consumption budget': maximum 2 hours/day of optional digital media, with at least 50% being intentional nourishing content
  5. 5.Repeat the audit monthly to track changes and catch drift. Your consumption patterns will shift over time — new apps emerge, old habits creep back, stress changes your defaults. The monthly audit is a recalibration tool, not a punishment. Trend your mood deltas over months — you should see a clear improvement in average post-consumption mood as you shift toward intentional, nourishing content
