What is Interleaving Practice for Skill Acquisition?

Interleaving is the practice of mixing different types of problems, skills, or topics within a single study session instead of 'blocking' (practicing one thing at a time). Research by Rohrer & Taylor (2007) and Kornell & Bjork (2008) shows interleaving improves discrimination learning — the ability to identify WHICH strategy or concept applies — by 43-76% over blocking. It feels harder and slower (a 'desirable difficulty'), but produces superior long-term retention and transfer because it forces the brain to continuously reload and compare mental schemas.

How do you do Interleaving Practice for Skill Acquisition?

  1. 1.Identify 3-4 related but distinct skills or problem types within your domain. For math: mix algebra, geometry, and probability problems. For language learning: alternate reading, writing, listening, and speaking. For music: interleave scales, sight-reading, improvisation, and repertoire pieces within the same session.
  2. 2.Structure your practice session as A-B-C-A-B-C rather than AAA-BBB-CCC. Spend 10-15 minutes on each type before switching. The switch should feel abrupt and slightly uncomfortable — the difficulty of re-orienting IS the mechanism that strengthens discriminative neural circuits.
  3. 3.Keep a practice log noting which combinations you interleaved. After 2 weeks, compare your performance on novel problems against a hypothetical blocked schedule. Research consistently shows that interleaving feels worse during practice (lower accuracy, higher frustration) but produces dramatically better test performance.
  4. 4.Apply the 'varied practice' extension: within each block, vary the specific parameters. If practicing basketball free throws, alternate between shooting from slightly different spots, not the exact same position. Contextual interference theory (Shea & Morgan 1979) shows this variation strengthens motor programs by forcing the brain to regenerate the action plan each time rather than simply repeating it.
  5. 5.For purely cognitive learning (studying for exams), interleave not just topics but cognitive operations: alternate between solving problems, explaining concepts verbally (Feynman technique), drawing diagrams, and teaching the material to an imaginary student.
