What is Elaborative Interrogation?

Elaborative interrogation is the systematic practice of asking 'why?' and 'how?' about every fact and concept you encounter, then generating explanations. Dunlosky et al. (2013) rated it as a high-utility technique after reviewing decades of evidence. The mechanism: generating explanations activates semantic memory networks and forces integration of new information with existing knowledge schemas. This creates multiple retrieval pathways and deeper encoding than passive reading. It is especially effective for factual and conceptual learning across all domains.

How do you do Elaborative Interrogation?

  1. 1.When you encounter any factual statement while reading or studying, immediately pause and ask: 'Why is this true?' and 'How does this work?' Then generate an explanation BEFORE reading the author's explanation. For example, if you read 'Neurons that fire together wire together,' ask yourself WHY synchronized firing would strengthen connections, and generate a plausible mechanism based on what you know.
  2. 2.Use the 'chain of why' technique: after answering the first 'why,' ask 'why is THAT true?' and continue for 3-5 levels. This creates a hierarchy of causal understanding rather than surface-level facts. Example: Why is sleep important for memory? Because consolidation requires replay. Why does replay help? Because repeated activation strengthens synaptic weights. Why? Because of long-term potentiation via NMDA receptors. Each level deepens your schema.
  3. 3.Practice 'connection interrogation': for every new concept, ask 'How does this connect to something I already know?' and find at least 2 connections. This leverages the associative nature of memory — the more connections a memory has, the more retrieval cues can activate it. Finding unexpected connections (analogies between different domains) produces the strongest encoding.
  4. 4.Apply elaborative interrogation to procedures and skills, not just facts: when learning a workflow or technique, ask 'Why is THIS step done before THAT step?' and 'What would happen if I skipped step 3?' Understanding the causal structure of a procedure makes it dramatically easier to remember and adapt to novel situations.
  5. 5.Create an 'interrogation journal': at the end of each learning session, write 5 'why/how' questions you couldn't fully answer. Research answers the next day. These gaps in your explanatory model are the highest-value targets for further study — they reveal where your understanding is shallow. Revisit and answer them using retrieval practice (from memory first, then check).
