Dead Hang Challenge

fitness · easy · 5 minutes daily

What is Dead Hang Challenge?

Hang from a pull-up bar for as long as possible, daily. Decompresses your spine, builds grip strength (the #1 predictor of all-cause mortality), opens shoulders, and is the gateway to pull-ups. Takes 10 seconds to set up and transforms your upper body.

How do you do Dead Hang Challenge?

  1. 1.Find something to hang from: pull-up bar, playground bar, sturdy tree branch, or doorframe pull-up bar ($20-30)
  2. 2.Day 1: hang as long as you can with full grip. Record your time. Most beginners: 15-30 seconds. Goal: 2 minutes
  3. 3.Hang daily (or 5-6x per week). Do 2-3 attempts with 1-2 minutes rest between. Track your best time
  4. 4.Focus on: relaxed shoulders (let them stretch toward ears), engaged core, breathing normally. Grip with full hand, not just fingers
  5. 5.Progression: dead hang → scapular pulls (engage shoulder blades) → active hang → knee raises → full pull-ups. The dead hang is step 1 to all upper body pulling strength

How long does it take?

5 minutes daily.

Is it hard to start?

easy.
