What is Menstrual Cycle-Aware Training?
Women's hormones change training capacity throughout the month. Training WITH your cycle instead of against it optimizes results and prevents burnout. High intensity when estrogen peaks, lower intensity during luteal phase.
Is there evidence for it?
EVIDENCEmoderate
How do you do Menstrual Cycle-Aware Training?
- 1.Follicular phase (days 1-14, estrogen rising): your body is primed for intensity. Go hard: HIIT, heavy lifting, PR attempts, new skills. Recovery is fastest here
- 2.Around ovulation (days 12-16): peak strength and power. This is when to test maxes, do competitions, or push your hardest
- 3.Luteal phase (days 15-28, progesterone high): higher body temperature, faster fatigue, more inflammation. Scale back to moderate intensity: Zone 2 cardio, yoga, Pilates, lighter weights with more reps
- 4.Late luteal / PMS (days 24-28): energy lowest, cravings highest. Gentle movement: walking, stretching, restorative yoga. Don't skip exercise — movement helps PMS symptoms — but don't force intensity
- 5.Track for 3 months using an app (Clue, Flo, Wild.AI). The patterns become clear and you'll instinctively know when to push and when to recover
How long does it take?
Same training time, adjusted intensity.
Is it hard to start?
medium.
