Micro-Adventure (Alastair Humphreys)

emotional · medium · 4-24 hours per micro-adventure

What is Micro-Adventure (Alastair Humphreys)?

A short, cheap, local adventure that breaks your routine: sleep outside in your backyard, swim in a local river at dawn, bike to a town you've never visited, walk somewhere without a map. Adventure doesn't require Everest — it requires novelty and a little discomfort.

Is there evidence for it?

How do you do Micro-Adventure (Alastair Humphreys)?

  1. 1.Pick something you've never done within 30 minutes of your home. Sleep on a rooftop, sunrise swim, all-night walk, bike to the next town, cook over a fire in a park
  2. 2.Plan it for this weekend. Not next month, not 'someday'. The point is that micro-adventures are spontaneous, cheap, and local — no excuses
  3. 3.Break at least one comfort zone rule: be outside after dark, sleep somewhere weird, eat something you've never tried, talk to strangers, get lost on purpose
  4. 4.Go alone OR with one friend. Groups of 4+ become social events, not adventures. The slight vulnerability of solo or duo is part of the magic
  5. 5.Do one per month. After 12 months: you'll have had 12 adventures, seen your area with fresh eyes, built resilience through novelty, and broken the pattern of work-screen-sleep-repeat

How long does it take?

4-24 hours per micro-adventure.

Is it hard to start?

medium.
