What is Inner Child Work?

Many adult emotional reactions (people-pleasing, perfectionism, fear of abandonment, rage) are echoes of childhood wounds. Inner child work helps you identify, compassionately parent, and heal these younger parts of yourself.

Is there evidence for it?

How do you do Inner Child Work?

  1. 1.Identify your inner child: think about a recurring emotional pattern (always feeling not good enough, fear of conflict, need for validation). Ask: 'How old do I feel when this happens?' The age that comes up is your inner child speaking
  2. 2.Write a letter to your younger self at that age. Tell them what they needed to hear: 'It wasn't your fault', 'You are enough', 'You're safe now', 'I'm here and I'm not leaving'
  3. 3.When triggered, pause and ask: 'Is this adult me reacting, or is a younger part of me reacting?' If younger: comfort that part before responding
  4. 4.Reparenting practice: give yourself what you didn't get as a child. Didn't get praise? Acknowledge your accomplishments out loud. Didn't get safety? Create comforting routines. Didn't get play? Schedule fun
  5. 5.Consider working with an IFS (Internal Family Systems) therapist — they specialize in parts work and inner child healing at a deeper level

How long does it take?
