How do you do Grief Journaling Protocol (Pennebaker Method)?
- 1.Days 1-4: write for exactly 20 minutes about your deepest thoughts and feelings regarding the loss, trauma, or emotional event. Set a timer
- 2.Rules: don't stop writing for the full 20 minutes. If you run out of things to say, repeat the last sentence until new thoughts come. Don't edit, don't worry about grammar or spelling
- 3.Write what you REALLY feel, not what you think you should feel. Anger, relief, guilt, confusion — all of it is valid and needs to come out on paper
- 4.After 4 days: you can stop or continue. Most people report feeling worse on days 1-2 (the wound is opened) but significantly better by day 4 (the wound is cleaned)
- 5.Pennebaker's research across 200+ studies: this protocol improves immune function, reduces doctor visits, lowers cortisol, and accelerates emotional processing. Writing literally heals
