Use the FORD acronym to navigate small talk without awkwardness: Family, Occupation, Recreation, Dreams. These four topics provide an endless supply of conversation material that naturally deepens connections. Move from surface (What do you do?) to substance (What are you excited about?) using this progression.

  1. 1.Family: 'Do you have family in the area?' or 'Any fun family plans coming up?'
  2. 2.Occupation: 'What do you do?' then go deeper: 'What's the most interesting part of your work?'
  3. 3.Recreation: 'What do you do for fun outside of work?' or 'Been watching anything good lately?'
  4. 4.Dreams: 'If you could do anything for a year with no constraints, what would it be?' — this is where real connection happens
  5. 5.Listen for 'hooks' — details they mention that you can ask follow-up questions about
