Community Building (Third Place Strategy)

What is Community Building (Third Place Strategy)?
Cultivate a 'third place' — a social environment separate from home (first place) and work (second place) where you regularly interact with the same group of people. This could be a gym, a cafe, a church, a sports league, a coworking space, or a volunteer group. Third places are where organic friendships form and social capital builds.

How do you do Community Building (Third Place Strategy)?
- 1.Identify activities you enjoy that are inherently social: sports leagues, book clubs, volunteering, art classes, religious groups
- 2.Choose one and commit to showing up consistently — same time, same place, every week for at least 3 months
- 3.Show up early or stay late — the best conversations happen in the margins, not during the structured activity
- 4.Learn people's names and remember details about their lives — ask about things they mentioned last time
- 5.After 4-6 weeks, suggest a hangout outside the regular activity: 'A few of us are grabbing dinner after — want to join?'
How long does it take?
2-4 hours per week.
Is it hard to start?
medium.
