What is Circle of Competence Mapping?
Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger's 'circle of competence' mental model states that knowing the boundary of what you truly understand — and staying within it — is more valuable than expanding your knowledge broadly. Buffett attributes his investing success not to what he knows, but to knowing what he doesn't know. Applied to life decisions, this model prevents costly overconfidence and focuses energy where you have genuine expertise.

How do you do Circle of Competence Mapping?
- 1.Draw three concentric circles: (1) inner = what you deeply understand through experience, (2) middle = what you know about but haven't practiced, (3) outer = what you don't know at all
- 2.Be brutally honest: most people's true circle of competence is much smaller than they think
- 3.For decisions within your circle: trust your judgment, act decisively
- 4.For decisions at the edge or outside: find someone whose circle of competence covers that area, or invest time learning before deciding
- 5.Quarterly review: has your circle expanded? Where did overconfidence cost you? Where did staying in your circle pay off?
How long does it take?
1 hour initial mapping, 20 min/quarter review.
Is it hard to start?
