80/20 Life Audit (Pareto Analysis)

What is 80/20 Life Audit (Pareto Analysis)?

The Pareto Principle, observed by Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto in 1897 and popularized by Richard Koch, states that roughly 80% of results come from 20% of efforts. Applied to life design, this means ruthlessly identifying the small number of activities, relationships, and habits that produce disproportionate happiness and results — then reallocating time from the unproductive 80% to double down on the vital 20%.

How do you do 80/20 Life Audit (Pareto Analysis)?

  1. 1.List all your recurring weekly activities, commitments, and relationships
  2. 2.Rate each on two dimensions: (1) how much joy/meaning it gives you, (2) how much it contributes to your goals
  3. 3.Identify the 20% that scores highest on both dimensions — these are your vital few
  4. 4.Identify the bottom 20% — activities that drain you and produce little. Eliminate, delegate, or drastically reduce these first
  5. 5.Reallocate the freed time to your vital 20%. Review monthly — the vital few may shift as your life evolves
