What is Abundance vs Scarcity Mindset Retraining?

Stephen Covey's abundance/scarcity framework from The 7 Habits identifies a fundamental orientation that shapes all decisions. Scarcity mindset sees life as a fixed pie — if someone else wins, you lose. Abundance mindset recognizes that there is enough for everyone and that another person's success doesn't diminish yours. Research in positive psychology links abundance thinking to greater creativity, cooperation, and life satisfaction.

How do you do Abundance vs Scarcity Mindset Retraining?

  1. 1.For one week, notice when you feel threatened by someone else's success — jealousy of a colleague's promotion, resentment at a friend's good fortune
  2. 2.Each time scarcity thinking appears, name it explicitly: 'That's my scarcity brain talking'
  3. 3.Reframe: instead of 'they got what I wanted,' try 'their success proves this is achievable — what can I learn from their path?'
  4. 4.Practice 'go-giver' behavior: share resources, make introductions, celebrate others publicly — abundance is built through action, not just thought
  5. 5.Weekly reflection: list 3 areas where you have more than enough (time, skills, relationships, health) to reinforce the abundance lens
