What is Morning Light Exposure Protocol?

Andrew Huberman's morning light protocol leverages the fact that specialized melanopsin ganglion cells in the retina set the circadian clock when exposed to bright light within the first hour of waking. This triggers a healthy cortisol spike (the body's natural alertness signal) and sets a 16-hour timer for melatonin release. Research from Dr. Samer Hattar at NIH confirms that properly timed light exposure is the single most powerful lever for sleep quality, energy, and mood.

How do you do Morning Light Exposure Protocol?

  1. 1.Get outside within 30-60 minutes of waking for 2-10 minutes of sunlight exposure (look toward the sun, not directly at it)
  2. 2.On cloudy days, increase to 15-20 minutes — cloud cover reduces effective lux but doesn't eliminate it
  3. 3.If you wake before sunrise, use a 10,000 lux light therapy lamp for 10-15 minutes
  4. 4.Do NOT wear sunglasses during morning light exposure — the signal needs to reach your retinal cells directly
  5. 5.Combine with your morning walk, coffee on the balcony, or outdoor stretching to build the habit naturally

How long does it take?

2-20 min/day.

Is it hard to start?

easy.
