What is Strategic Caffeine Timing Protocol?

Andrew Huberman's caffeine timing protocol, based on adenosine receptor research, recommends delaying caffeine intake to 90-120 minutes after waking. Cortisol naturally peaks in the first hour of waking — consuming caffeine during this window blunts cortisol's natural alerting effect and creates an afternoon crash. Proper timing extends caffeine's benefits and eliminates the need for a second cup.

How do you do Strategic Caffeine Timing Protocol?

  1. 1.Delay your first caffeine intake to 90-120 minutes after waking — use morning light exposure and cold water to bridge the gap
  2. 2.Set a caffeine curfew: no caffeine after 2 PM (caffeine has a 5-6 hour half-life, so a 2 PM coffee still affects 10 PM sleep)
  3. 3.If you feel a 2 PM slump, take a 10-20 minute nap or a brisk walk instead of reaching for coffee
  4. 4.Track your sleep quality for 2 weeks with delayed caffeine vs your old routine — most people notice dramatically better sleep
  5. 5.Consider cycling caffeine (5 days on, 2 days off) to prevent tolerance buildup and maintain sensitivity

How long does it take?

Minimal — timing adjustment only.

Is it hard to start?

easy.
