What is Oxygen Advantage (Buteyko Breathing)?

Retrain breathing patterns using Patrick McKeown's BOLT (Body Oxygen Level Test) score system to increase CO2 tolerance, improve oxygen delivery to tissues, and simulate high-altitude training. A healthy BOLT score is 40 seconds; most people start at 10-20.

How do you do Oxygen Advantage (Buteyko Breathing)?

  1. 1.Measure your BOLT score: breathe normally, exhale, pinch nose, time until first urge to breathe
  2. 2.Practice nasal breathing exclusively during all daily activities and light exercise
  3. 3.Do 'reduced breathing' exercises: breathe less than you want to for 5 minutes, 3x daily
  4. 4.Simulate altitude training: walk while holding breath after exhale for 15-40 paces, recover, repeat 8-10x
  5. 5.Progress through exercises until BOLT score reaches 40 seconds (typically 6-8 weeks)

How long does it take?

15-20 minutes of exercises daily + all-day nasal breathing habit.

Is it hard to start?

medium.
