What is Movement Snacks (Micro-Exercise Protocol)?
Exercise scientist Katy Bowman and researcher Dr. Keith Baar have shown that brief bouts of movement throughout the day (2-5 minutes every 30-60 minutes) produce metabolic and cognitive benefits that rival or exceed a single gym session. A 2023 study in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise found that 'exercise snacks' of just 1-2 minutes of vigorous stair climbing, done 3 times daily, significantly improved cardiorespiratory fitness in sedentary adults.

How do you do Movement Snacks (Micro-Exercise Protocol)?
- 1.Set a timer for every 45-60 minutes during work to trigger a 2-5 minute movement break
- 2.Choose from: 10 bodyweight squats, 20 seconds of jumping jacks, a flight of stairs climbed vigorously, 30 seconds of wall push-ups, a 2-minute walk
- 3.The key is intensity variety: some snacks should be gentle (stretching), others vigorous (brief stair sprints)
- 4.Track your total daily movement snacks — aim for 8-10 per workday (that's 20-50 minutes of accumulated movement)
- 5.Notice the cognitive benefit: movement snacks reset focus and prevent the 'fog' that comes from prolonged sitting
