Dopamine Baseline Reset (Lembke Protocol)

Self-Discipline · hard · 30 days minimum commitment, no additional daily time

What is Dopamine Baseline Reset (Lembke Protocol)?

A structured abstinence protocol based on psychiatrist Dr. Anna Lembke's research on the pleasure-pain balance. By voluntarily removing high-dopamine stimuli (social media, video games, pornography, sugar, alcohol, or any compulsive behavior) for a minimum of 30 days, you allow your brain's reward system to recalibrate to baseline. After the reset, previously mundane activities feel rewarding again, and cravings for the problematic stimulus significantly decrease.

How do you do Dopamine Baseline Reset (Lembke Protocol)?

  1. 1.Identify your primary high-dopamine stimulus — the behavior or substance you use most compulsively
  2. 2.Commit to complete abstinence from that stimulus for 30 consecutive days (partial reduction does not work)
  3. 3.Expect 2 weeks of increased irritability, boredom, and cravings as your dopamine receptors upregulate
  4. 4.Replace the stimulus with low-dopamine, high-meaning activities: walking, reading, cooking, face-to-face conversation
  5. 5.After 30 days, reintroduce the stimulus mindfully with strict boundaries — if compulsive use returns, extend the abstinence

How long does it take?

30 days minimum commitment, no additional daily time.

Is it hard to start?
