Morning Pages (Julia Cameron Method)

Creativity · easy · 30-40 minutes every morning

What is Morning Pages (Julia Cameron Method)?

The foundational creative recovery tool from Julia Cameron's The Artist's Way program. Every morning, immediately upon waking, you write three pages of longhand, stream-of-consciousness writing. There is no wrong way to do morning pages — they are not meant to be art, or even coherent. They are a brain drain: the mental clutter, worries, resentments, and to-do lists that block creative flow are captured on paper and cleared from your working memory, leaving your mind free for original thought.

How do you do Morning Pages (Julia Cameron Method)?

  1. 1.Write three pages of longhand writing every morning — no typing, no editing, no pausing to think
  2. 2.Do them first thing, before coffee, before checking your phone — the unfiltered pre-rational mind produces the most valuable material
  3. 3.Write anything: complaints, plans, fears, observations, nonsense — if you have nothing to say, write 'I have nothing to say' until something comes
  4. 4.Do not re-read your pages for at least 8 weeks — the practice is about output, not review
  5. 5.Commit to doing morning pages every single day for 12 weeks minimum — Cameron reports that the creative breakthroughs typically begin around week 4-6
