IDEO Brainstorming Rules (7-Rule Framework)

Creativity · easy · 60-90 minutes per brainstorming session

What is IDEO Brainstorming Rules (7-Rule Framework)?

A set of seven rules developed by design firm IDEO that transform unproductive brainstorming sessions into prolific idea-generating machines. Most brainstorming fails because criticism kills ideas before they can be developed, conversations fracture, and sessions lack urgency. IDEO's rules address each failure mode: defer judgment, encourage wild ideas, build on others' ideas, stay focused, one conversation at a time, be visual, and go for quantity (100+ ideas in 60 minutes).

How do you do IDEO Brainstorming Rules (7-Rule Framework)?

  1. 1.Post the seven rules visibly in the room before starting: (1) Defer Judgment, (2) Encourage Wild Ideas, (3) Build on Others' Ideas, (4) Stay Focused on Topic, (5) One Conversation at a Time, (6) Be Visual, (7) Go for Quantity
  2. 2.Set an aggressive quantity target: aim for 100 ideas in 60 minutes — when the group slows down, say 'We need 30 more ideas in 10 minutes'
  3. 3.Provide Post-its and markers to every participant — write each idea on a separate Post-it and stick it on the wall for visual accumulation
  4. 4.Use 'Yes, and...' language: when someone shares an idea, the next person must build on it before introducing a new direction
  5. 5.After the idea generation phase (separate session), cluster similar ideas, vote on the most promising, and assign rapid prototyping teams

How long does it take?

60-90 minutes per brainstorming session.

Is it hard to start?

easy.
