What is Habit Stacking?

Link a new desired habit to an existing established habit using the formula: 'After [CURRENT HABIT], I will [NEW HABIT].' Leverages existing neural pathways as automatic cues.

Is there evidence for it?

How do you do Habit Stacking?

  1. 1.List your current daily habits that are already automatic (morning coffee, brushing teeth, arriving at desk)
  2. 2.Choose the new habit you want to build and pair it with an existing habit that fits naturally
  3. 3.Write the explicit formula: 'After I [current habit], I will [new habit]'
  4. 4.Start with a tiny version of the new habit (under 2 minutes) to reduce friction
  5. 5.Stack multiple habits over time to create chains: After A, I do B. After B, I do C.

How long does it take?

Minimal — 2-5 minutes added to existing routines.

Is it hard to start?

easy.
