What is Temptation Bundling?

Pair an activity you 'should' do but tend to avoid with a guilty pleasure you 'want' to do. Makes delayed-reward behaviors instantly gratifying by bundling them with immediate pleasures.

Is there evidence for it?

How do you do Temptation Bundling?

  1. 1.Make two columns: 'Want' (guilty pleasures — podcasts, TV shows, treats) and 'Should' (beneficial but avoided — exercise, chores, studying)
  2. 2.Pair items across columns: only allow the 'want' activity during or immediately after the 'should' activity
  3. 3.Set a firm rule: the pleasure is ONLY available during the bundled activity (e.g., favorite podcast only at the gym)
  4. 4.Start with one bundle and add more as each becomes habitual
  5. 5.Replace bundles if the temptation loses its appeal over time

How long does it take?

No extra time — restructures existing activities.

Is it hard to start?

easy.
