What is Zettelkasten Method?

A networked note-taking system using atomic notes (one idea per note) connected by links. Ideas compound through unexpected connections between notes, producing original thinking over time.

How do you do Zettelkasten Method?

  1. 1.Write one idea per note (atomic notes) in your own words — never copy quotes without commentary
  2. 2.Give each note a unique identifier and add links to related notes (the connections are the value)
  3. 3.When adding a new note, browse existing notes to find connections — ask 'what does this remind me of?'
  4. 4.Create 'structure notes' (index notes) that serve as entry points to clusters of related ideas
  5. 5.Review and link regularly — the system's value grows exponentially with the number of interconnected notes
