Single-Tasking

productivity · medium · No extra time — replaces multitasking with sequential focused work

What is Single-Tasking?

Committing to doing only one thing at a time with full attention, explicitly rejecting multitasking. Research consistently shows multitasking reduces quality and increases errors while creating an illusion of productivity.

Is there evidence for it?

How do you do Single-Tasking?

  1. 1.Close all apps, tabs, and notifications unrelated to your current task before starting
  2. 2.Work on one task for a minimum of 25 minutes before allowing any switch (combine with Pomodoro)
  3. 3.If a new thought or task pops up, write it on a 'distraction list' and return to it later — don't switch
  4. 4.Use 'full-screen mode' for your current work to eliminate visual distractions
  5. 5.Practice single-tasking in daily life too: eat without screens, walk without podcasts, listen without planning your response

How long does it take?

No extra time — replaces multitasking with sequential focused work.

Is it hard to start?

medium.
