How do you do Family Systems Therapy (Bowen)?

  1. 1.Create a three-generation genogram (family map) to identify recurring patterns: triangulation, emotional cutoffs, over-functioning/under-functioning, and anxious reactivity
  2. 2.Practice 'I-position' statements in family interactions: express your own thoughts and feelings without blaming or requiring others to change ('I think...', 'I've decided...')
  3. 3.Identify your role in family triangles: when two family members pull you into their conflict, practice staying connected to both without taking sides
  4. 4.Build tolerance for others' anxiety: when a family member reacts emotionally to your boundary, stay calm and don't retract or counterattack; expect the initial anxiety spike to be brief
  5. 5.Work with a Bowen-trained therapist for coaching on re-entering your family of origin with a differentiated self, especially during holidays and major life events

How long does it take?

1-2 hours/week for therapy, plus daily mindful interactions.

Is it hard to start?

hard.
