How do you do Body-Based Grounding Techniques?
- 1.5-4-3-2-1 sensory grounding: name 5 things you see, 4 you can touch, 3 you hear, 2 you smell, 1 you taste; this interrupts anxiety spirals by redirecting attention to the present
- 2.Bilateral tapping (Butterfly Hug): cross arms over chest, hands on opposite shoulders, and alternate tapping left-right for 1-2 minutes; this bilateral stimulation calms the amygdala (derived from EMDR)
- 3.Feet-on-floor grounding: press both feet firmly into the floor, notice the pressure, temperature, and texture; push down and feel the ground pushing back; this counters dissociation
- 4.Cold water reset: hold ice cubes in your hands, splash cold water on your face, or press a cold can to your neck; the intense sensation overrides emotional flooding and activates the dive reflex
- 5.Body inventory scan: starting from feet, tense each muscle group for 5 seconds then release, moving upward through calves, thighs, glutes, core, fists, shoulders, and face; progressive muscle relaxation reduces physiological arousal in 5-10 minutes
How long does it take?
2-10 min per episode; practice daily for skill building.
Is it hard to start?
