What is Digital Garden / Personal Knowledge Management?

A continuously evolving personal knowledge system using interconnected atomic notes (Zettelkasten method) to capture, organize, and surface ideas over time. Functions as an external brain that grows smarter with use and generates unexpected connections between ideas.

How do you do Digital Garden / Personal Knowledge Management?

  1. 1.Choose your tool (Obsidian, Logseq, Roam, or even paper index cards) and commit to a single atomic note format: one idea per note, written in your own words, with a unique identifier
  2. 2.Capture insights from reading, conversations, and experiences as individual notes — not full book summaries but specific ideas that resonated or challenged you
  3. 3.Link aggressively: every new note should connect to at least 2-3 existing notes. The value isn't in individual notes but in the web of connections between them
  4. 4.Create 'Maps of Content' (MOCs) — index notes that curate and organize clusters of related ideas for specific projects or domains
  5. 5.Tend your garden weekly: review recent notes, strengthen links, prune outdated ideas, and notice emerging patterns or themes you hadn't planned

How long does it take?

15-30 minutes daily for capture, 1 hour weekly for tending.

Is it hard to start?

medium.
