What is Dialectical Thinking (Wise Mind Practice)?
Adapted from Marsha Linehan's DBT, this practice develops the ability to hold two seemingly contradictory truths simultaneously, integrating emotional mind and rational mind into 'wise mind' — a balanced state that acknowledges both feelings and facts.
Is there evidence for it?
EVIDENCEstrong
How do you do Dialectical Thinking (Wise Mind Practice)?
- 1.Learn the three minds: Emotional Mind (driven by feelings, impulsive, passionate), Rational Mind (driven by facts, logical, sometimes cold), and Wise Mind (integration of both — considers feelings AND facts to make balanced decisions)
- 2.Practice 'both-and' thinking: When facing a dilemma, replace 'but' with 'and.' For example: 'I'm afraid AND I can still do this.' 'This person hurt me AND I can understand why they did it.' 'I want to rest AND I know exercise will help me'
- 3.Do the 'wise mind meditation': Sit quietly, take 3 breaths, then ask yourself: 'What does my wise mind know about this situation?' Wait patiently for the answer that combines both feeling and logic
- 4.Journal dialectical tensions: When stuck in a conflict (internal or external), write out both opposing positions fully and honestly, then find the synthesis — the truth that includes both
- 5.Apply walking the middle path: In relationships and decisions, practice validating both sides before choosing. Effective action doesn't require declaring one side completely right and the other wrong
How long does it take?
10-15 minutes daily.
Is it hard to start?
medium.
