What is Ultradian Rhythm Work Protocol?

Research by sleep scientist Nathaniel Kleitman and popularized by Andrew Huberman reveals that humans cycle through 90-minute ultradian rhythms of alertness throughout the day, not just during sleep. Working in alignment with these natural cycles — 90 minutes of focused work followed by deliberate rest — produces significantly higher quality output than grinding through long, undifferentiated blocks.

How do you do Ultradian Rhythm Work Protocol?

  1. 1.Set a timer for 90 minutes when starting focused work. Expect the first 5-10 minutes to feel like a 'warm-up' — this is normal neurochemistry
  2. 2.During the 90-minute block: single-task only, no email, no phone, no context-switching
  3. 3.When the timer rings, take a genuine 15-20 minute break: walk, rest your eyes, do nothing — your brain is consolidating
  4. 4.Aim for 2-3 ultradian work blocks per day maximum — more than that produces diminishing returns
  5. 5.Space blocks 2-4 hours apart to allow full cognitive recovery between sessions

How long does it take?

90 min work + 20 min rest per cycle.

Is it hard to start?

medium.
