How do you do Eye Health Protocol (20-20-20 Rule + Exercises)?
- 1.Implement the 20-20-20 rule strictly: every 20 minutes of screen time, look at something at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Set a timer. A 2020 study showed significant improvements in dry eye symptoms and tear film stability.
- 2.Perform palming: rub hands together for warmth, then cup palms over closed eyes (no pressure on eyeballs) for 60 seconds. This relaxes the ciliary muscle and provides a complete visual rest.
- 3.Practice focus shifting: hold a finger 6 inches from your nose, focus on it for 15 seconds, then shift focus to an object 20+ feet away for 15 seconds. Repeat 10 times. This exercises the accommodation reflex.
- 4.Do eye movement exercises: without moving your head, look up-down (10 reps), left-right (10 reps), and diagonal (10 reps). Then trace slow circles clockwise and counterclockwise (5 each). This stretches extraocular muscles.
- 5.Optimize your environment: position screen at arm's length, top of screen at eye level, reduce glare, use blue-light filtering after sunset, and blink consciously (we blink 66% less when looking at screens). Perform eye exercises 2-3 times daily.
How long does it take?
5 minutes per session, 2-3x/day plus ongoing 20-20-20 habit.
