What is Kapalabhati (Skull Shining Breath)?
A vigorous yogic cleansing breath involving rapid, forceful exhalations powered by abdominal contractions followed by passive inhalations. Research shows increased gamma wave brain activation, improved lung function, enhanced oxygen saturation, and stimulation of the default mode network.
Is there evidence for it?
EVIDENCEmoderate
How do you do Kapalabhati (Skull Shining Breath)?
- 1.Sit in a comfortable upright position with hands on knees; take 2-3 deep natural breaths to settle
- 2.Begin with sharp, forceful exhalations through the nose by contracting the lower belly — the inhale happens naturally as the belly relaxes
- 3.Start with 30 pumps at a moderate pace (about 1 per second), then rest and breathe normally for 30 seconds
- 4.Gradually increase to 3 rounds of 60 pumps each with rest periods between; advanced practitioners do 120 pumps per round
- 5.Practice on an empty stomach, ideally in the morning; avoid if you have high/low blood pressure, heart disease, glaucoma, or during pregnancy
How long does it take?
5-10 minutes daily.
Is it hard to start?
medium.
