What is Crawling Patterns (Developmental Movement)?
Reintroducing infant developmental movement patterns (crawling) into adult fitness for core stability, cross-body coordination, and neurological function. Crawling activates the corpus callosum, requiring both brain hemispheres to coordinate, which strengthens neural connections. Engages shoulders, arms, core, hips, and legs simultaneously. Used in rehabilitation settings and by the Mayo Clinic for fall-risk reduction.

How do you do Crawling Patterns (Developmental Movement)?
- 1.Start with baby crawl (hands and knees): crawl forward 10 meters using contralateral pattern (right hand + left knee move together), then backward 10 meters; 3 sets
- 2.Progress to bear crawl (hands and feet, hips high): maintain knees 1-2 inches off the ground, crawl forward and backward 10 meters each; focus on keeping hips level; 3 sets
- 3.Practice lateral crawling: crab walk (face up, hands and feet) sideways 10 meters each direction; spider crawl (face down) sideways 10 meters each direction; 2 sets each
- 4.Add ipsilateral (same-side) crawling: move right hand and right foot together, then left hand and left foot — this is counterintuitive and challenges coordination; 2 sets of 10 meters
- 5.Build a 10-minute flow: alternate between bear crawl, crab walk, lizard crawl (low to ground with rotation), and army crawl, transitioning smoothly between patterns
How long does it take?
10-20 minutes, 3-5 times per week.
