What is Ashtanga Yoga (Primary Series)?
A dynamic, physically demanding yoga system developed by K. Pattabhi Jois, where postures are performed in a fixed sequence linked by breath-synchronized movement (vinyasa). The Primary Series ('Yoga Chikitsa' — yoga therapy) purifies and heals the body through ~75 poses. Begins with 5 rounds each of Sun Salutation A and B, followed by standing, seated, and finishing sequences. Traditionally practiced 6 mornings per week.

How do you do Ashtanga Yoga (Primary Series)?
- 1.Open with the Ashtanga opening chant, then perform 5 repetitions of Surya Namaskar A (10 transitions through 7 poses: Samasthiti, Uttanasana, Ardha Uttanasana, Chaturanga, Upward Dog, Downward Dog)
- 2.Perform 5 repetitions of Surya Namaskar B (19 movements adding Utkatasana and Virabhadrasana I) — this completes the warm-up
- 3.Move through the standing sequence: Padangusthasana, Padahastasana, Trikonasana, Parivrtta Trikonasana, through to Virabhadrasana — linking each pose with a vinyasa
- 4.Begin the seated sequence: Paschimottanasana, Purvottanasana, and progress through forward folds, twists, and hip openers; for beginners, practice only the first 5-10 seated poses and add one new pose per week
- 5.Close with the finishing sequence: shoulder stand, headstand (when ready), Padmasana, and final rest; coordinate every movement with either inhale or exhale — breath drives the practice
How long does it take?
