What is Yin Yoga?

A slow-paced yoga practice where passive poses are held for 3-10 minutes (up to 20 for advanced practitioners) to target deep connective tissues: fascia, ligaments, and tendons rather than muscles. Based on the principle that fascia needs at least 120 seconds of sustained load to affect its elasticity. Holding 4+ minutes allows fascial 'creep' — gradual lengthening under constant load. Strongly meditative and complementary to dynamic practices.

How do you do Yin Yoga?

  1. 1.Begin in a comfortable seated position and set an intention; start with Butterfly Pose (soles of feet together, fold forward) — hold for 3-5 minutes, allowing gravity to create the stretch without muscular effort
  2. 2.Move to Dragon Pose (deep lunge with back knee down) for 3-5 minutes each side, targeting hip flexors and quadriceps — use props (blocks, blankets) to support yourself at a sustainable depth
  3. 3.Practice Caterpillar Pose (seated forward fold with legs straight) for 3-5 minutes, letting the spine round naturally; then Sphinx or Seal Pose (gentle backbend) for 3-5 minutes
  4. 4.Include Shoelace Pose (crossed legs, fold forward) for 3-5 minutes each side for deep hip opening, and Twisted Roots (supine twist) for 3-5 minutes each side
  5. 5.End with Savasana (5 minutes); total practice is 45-75 minutes; key principle: find your edge, stay still, hold time — no bouncing, no forcing, no muscular engagement

How long does it take?

45-75 minutes, 2-4 times per week.
