What is Capoeira?

An Afro-Brazilian martial art uniquely blending combat, dance, acrobatics, and music, performed in a circle (roda) with live percussion. The foundational movement is the ginga — a rhythmic, swaying footwork that establishes continuous flow and deceptive rhythm. Includes kicks (meia-lua, armada, rabo de arraia), evasions (esquivas), acrobatics (au/cartwheel, macaco), and ground movement. Two main styles: Angola (close to ground, traditional) and Regional (upright, athletic).

How do you do Capoeira?

  1. 1.Learn the ginga: from a parallel stance, step one foot back at 45 degrees while swinging the opposite arm forward; alternate sides in a continuous rocking rhythm — practice 5 minutes until the movement feels natural and musical
  2. 2.Add basic esquivas (dodges): esquiva lateral (side dodge, lowering to one side), esquiva de frente (forward dodge, dropping to a deep squat), negativa (one leg extended, body low to ground) — practice entering and exiting each from the ginga
  3. 3.Learn fundamental kicks: meia-lua de frente (front half-moon kick, circular arc), martelo (roundhouse), and bencao (front push kick) — practice 10 reps each side, always returning to the ginga between kicks
  4. 4.Practice the au (cartwheel) and role (forward shoulder roll) as transitions and escapes; combine with esquivas to create attack-defense sequences with a partner
  5. 5.Join a roda: play with a partner inside the circle, responding to their movements with your own kicks, dodges, and acrobatics while berimbau music sets the rhythm and speed

How long does it take?

60-90 minutes, 2-3 times per week.

Is it hard to start?
