What is Cyclic Hyperventilation with Retention?
A structured protocol of 25 rapid deep breaths followed by an extended breath-hold on empty lungs. This is the core breathing pattern used in the Wim Hof Method but can be practiced as a standalone technique. The hyperventilation phase blows off CO2, raising blood pH (alkalosis), which paradoxically allows longer breath holds because the urge to breathe is driven by CO2, not oxygen. Used for CO2 tolerance training, energy, and focus.

How do you do Cyclic Hyperventilation with Retention?
- 1.Lie on your back in a safe location — never practice near water, while driving, or standing. Take 2-3 normal breaths to settle in
- 2.Take 25 deep, powerful breaths: inhale fully through the nose into the belly and chest (about 1.5 seconds), then let the exhale fall out passively without forcing (about 1 second). Keep a steady rhythm — approximately 25 breaths in about 60-70 seconds
- 3.After the 25th breath, exhale normally and then hold your breath with lungs at about 30% capacity (not completely empty, not full). Start your timer. Relax every muscle in your body — jaw, shoulders, hands, legs. The urge to breathe will come in waves; let each wave pass
- 4.When you truly need to breathe (not just the first urge, but when you feel you must), inhale deeply and hold for 15 seconds with lungs full, gently engaging your core
- 5.Exhale and rest for 30 seconds with normal breathing. This is one round. Perform 3 rounds. Track your retention times — they will typically increase from round 1 to round 3 (e.g., 1:15 → 1:45 → 2:30). Practice daily, ideally first thing in the morning on an empty stomach.
