Therapeutic Journaling (Pennebaker Method)

emotional · medium · 20 minutes per day for 4 days

What is Therapeutic Journaling (Pennebaker Method)?

Write about your deepest thoughts and feelings about a stressful or traumatic experience for 20 minutes, 4 days in a row. Pennebaker's research shows this reduces doctor visits, boosts immune function, and improves mood — more than talking about it.

How do you do Therapeutic Journaling (Pennebaker Method)?

  1. 1.Set a timer for 20 minutes. Write about your deepest thoughts and feelings about something that's bothering you
  2. 2.Don't worry about grammar, spelling, or structure. No one will read this
  3. 3.Explore the same event from different angles across 4 consecutive days: Day 1 = what happened, Day 2 = how you felt, Day 3 = what it means, Day 4 = how you'll move forward
  4. 4.Expect to feel slightly worse after Day 1-2. This is normal — you're processing. By Day 3-4 most people feel relief and clarity
  5. 5.After the 4 days, you can destroy what you wrote if you want. The healing is in the writing, not the re-reading

How long does it take?

20 minutes per day for 4 days.

Is it hard to start?

medium.
