How do you do Emotion Coaching for Parents?

  1. 1.Step 1: Be aware of your child's emotion BEFORE it escalates. Watch for early signs: tone change, body language, withdrawal
  2. 2.Step 2: See the emotion as an opportunity for connection, not a problem to fix. 'She's angry' → 'She needs help with a big feeling'
  3. 3.Step 3: Listen and validate: 'You're really mad that your sister took your toy. I'd be mad too.' Don't rush to fix it
  4. 4.Step 4: Help them name the emotion: 'That feeling in your tummy when you want to hit — that's called frustration. Everyone gets it'
  5. 5.Step 5: Set limits while problem-solving: 'It's okay to be mad. It's NOT okay to hit. What else could you do when you feel this way?'
