Deep Work Blocks

What is Deep Work Blocks?
Cal Newport's protocol for scheduling extended periods (90 min to 4+ hours) of completely undistracted, cognitively demanding work. Deep work is the ability to focus without distraction on a demanding task — it's both increasingly rare and increasingly valuable. The protocol treats focus as a skill that must be trained, not just a setting to toggle on.

How do you do Deep Work Blocks?
- 1.Schedule deep work blocks on your calendar as non-negotiable appointments: start with 90-minute blocks and build to 4 hours over weeks. Place them during your peak cognitive hours (typically morning for most people). Mark them as 'busy' so others can't book over them. Plan exactly what you'll work on before the block starts
- 2.Create a deep work shutdown ritual: before starting, close all browser tabs except what you need, put phone in another room on silent (not vibrate), close email and Slack, put on noise-cancelling headphones or use white noise. If in an open office, use a visual signal (headphones, 'do not disturb' sign). Communicate boundaries to colleagues
- 3.During the block, use a single-task rule: work on ONE defined task or project. If you catch yourself reaching for your phone or opening a social site, note the urge on a 'distraction list' (pad of paper) and immediately return to task. Do not 'just quickly check' anything. The distraction list handles the anxiety that you'll forget something
- 4.End each deep work session with a shutdown ritual: review what you accomplished, capture next steps, process items from your distraction list, and say a verbal phrase like 'shutdown complete' to signal to your brain that work mode is over. This prevents work thoughts from bleeding into personal time
- 5.Track your deep work hours weekly (aim for 4+ hours/day for knowledge workers, build up gradually). Review weekly: what helped? What broke your focus? Iterate on your protocol. Over 2-3 months of consistent practice, your ability to sustain deep focus will measurably improve
