Nature Dose (20-Minute Prescription)
health · easy · 20 minutes, 3x per week
What is Nature Dose (20-Minute Prescription)?
Spend 20 minutes in nature, 3x per week. That's the dose at which cortisol drops maximally. Not hiking, not exercising — just BEING in a natural setting. Doctors in the UK, Japan, and Canada now prescribe nature as medicine.

How do you do Nature Dose (20-Minute Prescription)?
- 1.Find any natural setting: park, garden, riverbank, forest, beach. Urban parks count — you don't need wilderness
- 2.Spend 20 minutes minimum. Sit on a bench, walk slowly, or just stand and observe. The key is immersion without distraction — phone stays in pocket
- 3.Engage your senses: what do you hear? Birds, wind, water, leaves. What do you see? Light through trees, patterns in bark, clouds moving. What do you smell? Earth, flowers, rain
- 4.Do this 3x per week for optimal cortisol reduction. A 2019 study (Frontiers in Psychology) found that 20-30 minutes, 3x per week produced the steepest cortisol decline
- 5.No phone, no podcast, no audiobook. Just you and the trees. The mental benefits come from your attention being captured by nature (what psychologists call 'soft fascination') — screens block this
How long does it take?
