What is Power of Touch (Skin Hunger Protocol)?

Humans need 8-12 meaningful touches per day to thrive. Most adults get far fewer. Touch releases oxytocin, reduces cortisol, lowers blood pressure, and strengthens immunity. If you live alone: self-massage, pets, and professional massage all count.

Is there evidence for it?

How do you do Power of Touch (Skin Hunger Protocol)?

  1. 1.With a partner: aim for 8+ touches daily beyond functional contact. Hand on shoulder, forehead kiss, hold hands while walking, 20-second hug (that's how long it takes for oxytocin release)
  2. 2.The 6-second kiss: Gottman's research shows that a 6-second kiss (not a peck) maintains physical connection in long-term relationships. Do it daily — arriving home, leaving, and before bed
  3. 3.If single/alone: self-massage (hands, feet, neck for 5 minutes), get a professional massage monthly, pet animals (petting a dog for 15 minutes reduces cortisol by 10%)
  4. 4.Hug friends: a 3-second hug is a greeting. A 20-second hug is medicine. If your culture allows it, hug your friends longer
  5. 5.For those uncomfortable with touch: start with self-soothing gestures — hand on heart, self-hug, rubbing your own arms. Your nervous system responds to self-touch too

How long does it take?

Moments throughout the day.

Is it hard to start?
