Habit Tracking

What is Habit Tracking?
Visually recording daily habit completion to maintain awareness and motivation. The act of tracking itself increases adherence — 'don't break the chain' creates powerful momentum through loss aversion.
Is there evidence for it?
EVIDENCEmoderate
How do you do Habit Tracking?
- 1.Choose 3-5 habits maximum to track simultaneously (more leads to tracking fatigue)
- 2.Use a simple method: paper calendar with X marks, a habit app (Streaks, HabitBear, Loop), or a spreadsheet
- 3.Track immediately after completing the habit — don't wait until end of day (memory distortion)
- 4.Focus on maintaining your streak: the visual chain of completed days becomes motivating to protect
- 5.Review weekly: if a habit is consistently missed, it's too hard — simplify it or change the cue
How long does it take?
2-5 min/day.
Is it hard to start?
easy.
