What is First Principles Thinking Protocol?
First principles thinking, traced back to Aristotle and popularized by Elon Musk, is the practice of breaking down complex problems to their fundamental truths and building up from there, rather than reasoning by analogy. This approach bypasses conventional wisdom and assumptions, leading to genuinely novel solutions. It is the antidote to 'we've always done it this way' thinking.
Is there evidence for it?

How do you do First Principles Thinking Protocol?
- 1.Pick a problem or assumption you're stuck on — something where you feel constrained
- 2.List every assumption embedded in your current approach (e.g., 'a house must be built with wood or brick')
- 3.For each assumption, ask: 'Is this actually true? What evidence proves it? Could it be otherwise?'
- 4.Identify the irreducible core truths — the physics-level facts that cannot be argued (e.g., 'a house needs to protect from weather and provide structure')
- 5.Rebuild your solution from those core truths only — you'll often find cheaper, faster, or more elegant approaches that analogy-thinking would never surface
How long does it take?
20-30 min per problem.
Is it hard to start?
hard.
